Wow! Easter is EARLY this year! That, combined with the fact that Sarah's birthday was a week ago, led to a pretty low-key Easter prep this year. We tie-dyed a half a dozen eggs again this year, which is my new favorite thing to do with Easter eggs. As a kid, I always hated dying eggs in cups of yucky-smelling colored water. I REALLY hated those stupid wire egg holders that are supposed to provide some sort of control over the dying process. Tie-dying is so much easier, and the result is so much more fun! We've done it two years in a row, and I think it's going to be the only way we dye eggs at the Archer house. (Sarah, you can thank me for this later!)
Here's how it works. Go to the thrift store and buy some 100% silk ties. This will only work with real silk ties, so don't be tempted by others! I haven't found any particular colors or patterns that work better than others, so just grab the ones that interest you. While you're there, grab a plain white cotton pillowcase, too.
Once you have those ties at home, cut them into squares large enough to cover your egg. Then cut squares from the pillowcase just a little bigger than the ones you cut from the ties. Wrap the eggs in the ties with the FRONT of the tie against the egg. Twist the ends of the silk together to hold in place, then cover with the cotton pillowcase. Tie the pillowcase pouch closed with a piece of white string or ribbon. Place the eggs in a large pot, cover with at least 2 inches of water, add 1/4 cup of vinegar and bring to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Then let the eggs cool completely on a paper towel before pulling away the wrapping to reveal your beautiful and unique Easter eggs! Take that, Paas dye tablets!!!

You may have a battle on your hands if you try to convince a 2-year-old that we don't dye eggs in the toaster!
