This Saturday, our Parents As Teachers organization held an "Explore with Animals" event in the Shawnee Mission North cafeteria. If asked, Sarah will tell you that the animals we saw were "Keeta" (her way of saying "Nikita," the name of one of the polar bears at the Kansas City Zoo). We did NOT see polar bears, but she did get up close and personal with guinea pigs, chinchillas, snakes, lizards, and even an alligator!
She seemed especially infatuated with the rabbit. I thought it was just because he was so cute and cuddly, but then Sarah turned to me and said, "Bunny come my house? Bring eggs?" Hmmm. Looks like she was just after more Easter treats. Sorry, bunny!
The thing that surprised me the most at this event, however, was Sarah's interest in face painting! She wandered away from the animals to watch other children getting their faces painted, and when I asked if she wanted her face painted, too, she nodded and said, "Butterfly." Wow! That girl knows what she wants! And she followed through, too. Sarah climbed into the chair and demanded, "Pink!" and then actually leaned into the paint brush. It was not at all what I would have expected from her!
When the woman had finished Sarah's butterfly, she held up a mirror so Sarah could see it. She smiled a big smile and then sweetly asked, "Sparkles?" This girl sweet-charmed the face painter into digging some pink glitter out of her bag and sprinkling it on the butterfly! And I honestly have no idea where that request came from, because none of the other kids had gotten glitter on their face paint!!!
Once the paint was dry, we headed home to enjoy some lovely spring weather in our own backyard. Sarah was happy to show off her butterfly for me and my camera!
We also had the chance to try out the new half-bucket swing I bought for Sarah's "park." She loved that she could get in and out by herself, and I loved that she didn't fall out of it! She kept leaning back and saying, "I swing myself!"
