Holy cow. When did my baby get so big?!? You'd think I'd notice her growing, seeing as how I am the one who changed out all her 2T pants for 3T pants when they got too short this winter and bought her new size 9 tennis shoes when she could no longer squeeze her toes into the light-up Dora shoes she's worn for the last 6 months. I celebrated with her when she learned to write actual letters (she's really good at "T" and "H") and I cheered when she figured out how to get dressed/undressed by herself in the last month. So how could I have missed the fact that she's getting so BIG??? And it's not just how big she is - it's how grown up she can be sometimes. It simply amazes me.
This birthday was proof of her grown-up "understanding." This year, Sarah really understood that she would be getting presents on her special day. Of course, when asked what she wanted for her birthday, she continued to confound me. She stated very specifically that she wanted a "pink dinosaur for the day, and a blue dinosaur for the night." Hmmm. What an odd request from a girl who has shown NO interest in dinosaurs until announcing that this is the birthday present of her dreams!
After looking and looking for both pink and blue dinosaurs (both of which proved harder to find than you might think!), her daddy and I decided that we would just let her make her own dinosaur as this year's birthday present! So, on the night before her birthday, we took her to the Build-A-Dino workshop inside the T-Rex restaurant at The Legends....
...where Sarah ended up picking a PURPLE dinosaur to take home with her. Good thing we let her choose!
After selecting a mostly stuffing-free dino, Sarah got to pick a heart to put inside the little guy. She was instructed to rub it on her head so her dino could be smart. Then she rubbed it on her cheek so he could be cute. Finally, she rubbed the heart between her hands and gave the heart a kiss so her dino could be loved. It was pretty cute!
Then she stuck that heart inside her dino and got to work filling him up with stuffing! She was very interested in watching him get bigger and bigger the longer she stood on the pedal that shot stuffing into his back.
Finally, he was as stuffed as he was going to safely get! The Build-A-Dino helper closed up his back, and he was finally Sarah's to love on...
Sarah took him over to the dino showers and gave him his first bath. (In all honesty, she was pretty put out that there was no actual water involved in this activity!)
And then we got to fill out a birth certificate for her dino!
Sarah decided to name her dino Lincoln. She made sure we knew he was a "she," though. Silly girl!
So, with Lincoln (and Bumpy Ellie) in hand, we headed back toward our car to take our new friend home.
On the way to the car, however, we passed a bunch of ride-on toys. Sarah HAD to stop, and we ended up having to let her play for about 30 minutes. Even then, she showed us that almost-three-year-old spirit and threw a big tantrum when it was time to leave. Guess I know what we'll do next time I want to let her play but don't feel like going to the park!
Since she had so much fun selling us ice cream, we ended the evening with dinner at Culvers. Since blue is her favorite color, Sarah was thrilled that she got a blue straw, a blue spoon, and even blue sprinkles on her ice cream! We decided not to tell her that everything is blue at Culvers and let her think that everything was done just for her because it was her birthday. Thanks for helping us out, Culvers!
All in all, it wasn't a bad way to start her birthday celebration!
